Jim was born on Scottsville, Kentucky and attended Allen Country High School. During his time at school, he averaged nearly 40 points per game. He then went to Western Kentucky University and played for four years from 1967 to 1971. He led his team to a third place finish in 1971 NCAA Men’s Division I Basketball tournament. He also set records with 2238 career points and 1118 career rebounds during his time at Western Kentucky University.
Jim was then drafted by the Seattle SuperSonics in the 2nd round of 1971 NBA draft but he began his professional career with Carolina Cougar, who offered him $1.35 million contract to be paid over 25 years. In his first season with the Cougar, he averaged 26.8 points and 14 rebounds in 58 games and also appeared in 1972 ABA All-Star Game. McDaniels was in feud with the club regarding his contract negotiation and at the end of the season he decided to leave for the SuperSonics.
McDaniels remained with SuperSonics for two seasons but he struggled to show his same level of performance he did with Carolina Cougars. He averaged just 5.5 points per game. In an interview he regretted and admitted saying that “I should have stayed in the ABA for a couple of years. I was just young and things started going bad for me and I didn’t know how to handle them”. He was then released by manager Bill Russell in 1974. He then joined Los Angeles Lakers, Buffalo Braves, Kentucky Colonels of the ABA and Snaidero Udine of Italy in four years. In 1978 he finally decided to retire from basketball.
Regarding his personal life, McDaniels had two sons named Eskias McDaniels and Shannon Martin. On September 6, 2017 at the age of 69, Jim McDaniels died in Bowling Green, Kentucky.
