Michael was born on June 2, 1938 in Ohio. He went to Akron East High School and then Kent State University where he played college baseball and basketball for the Kent State Golden Flashes. He was then signed by Pittsburg Pirates in 1959 and eventually made his professional MLB debut with the Pirates in July 15, 1966.
The next year, Michael was traded to Los Angeles Dodgers where he spent only one season. He was then purchased by the New York Yankees. He played there for 6 years from 198 to 1974 but he was released before the 1975 season. He then signed with Detroit Tigers. He retired on September 9, 1975 with a .229 batting average, 15 home runs and 226 runs batted in total 973 games played.
After retiring as a player, Michael became a coach with New York Yankees. He served as manager of the Yankees Triple-A team in 1979 and as general manager of the Yankees in 1980. He then served as the Yankees manager in 1981 and 1982 finishing with a record 92 wins and 76 losses. He then managed Chicago Clubs in 1986 in 1987 with a record of 114 wins and 124 losses.
In 1990, he returned as the Yankees manager and during his second tenure, he build a youth talent. During his time as general manager, the Yankees drafter or signed players like Mariano Rivera, Andy Pettitte, Derek Jeter, Jorge Posada and many others. His youth policy system helped the Yankees to win championship in 1996 and from 1998 to 2000. Michael then served as vice-president of major league scouting for the Yankees from 1996 to 2002. In 2003, he was promoted to vice-president and senior advisor.
