Canelo was born on July 18, 1990 in Guadalajara, Mexico and he started boxing at 13 years old, after watching his older brother Rigoberto Lavarez fight in a ring. As an amateur, he won the silver medal at the junior Mexican National Championships in 2014 and he also became the 2005 Junior Mexican National Chamionhisp in Chiapas at the age of 15.
