Born on October 24, 1991 in California, United States, Gostelum was a state championship wrestler at Cibola High School. He then went to North Idaho College for one year and then made his professional MMA debut on December 11, 2010. He won his debut match via submission in the second round.
In 2013, Gastelum was selected for The Ultimate Fighter: Team Jones vs. Team Sonnen. Playing for Team Sonnen, he won his first fight against Kito Andrews.
