Menendez was born on January 1, 1954 in New York City. His father Mario Menendez was a carpenter and his mother Evangelina was a seamstress. Both were Cuban immigrants who left Cuba in late 1953. He attended Union Hill High School and then Saint Peter’s College in Jersey City. He graduated with a B.A. in political science and earned his Jurius Doctor degree from Rutgers School of Law in 1979.
His early political career started at the age of 20 where he was first elected to the Union City School District’s Board of Education. In 1986 he was elected mayor of Union City and severed as a mayor until 1992. In 1988, continuing his mayor position, he was elected to represent the state’s 33rd district in the General Assembly of New Jersey and within three years he moved to New Jersey State Senate winning the March 1991 special election for the 33rd Senate district.
In 1992, he won the U.S. House of Representatives election with 64% of the vote defeating Judge Fred J, Theemling Jr. in the general election. After that he won re-election every two years and in 2006 he was appointed to fill U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Jon Corzine and was elected to a full six year term in November and re-elected following in 2012 making him the sixth Latino to serve in the U.S. Senate. In 2015, Bob was ranked #1 on The Hudson Reporter’s Annual Power List of the “Fifty Most Powerful Political Figures in Hudson County”
Regarding his personal life, Robert Menendez is married to Jane Jacobsen. Jane is a teacher for the Union City Board of Education and Union City Public Schools. Together, they had two children; a daughter named Alicia and a son named Robert. Bob and Jane divorced in 2005 due to their personal terms.
